These courses include teacher and career preparation, college placement and developmental education courses. The model uses the same approach these institutions already use when adopting a new textbook or other instructional material and enables recovery of the license costs directly from students who purchase the license at the college bookstore or through course fees.

PLATO courses address key standards and a range of common objectives, including college readiness standards, to effectively address a broad array of education needs for adult learners. Each course contains between 50 and 110 instructional hours, depending on subject area and level of difficulty. Included with every course are robust assessment tools, including pre- and post-unit assessments and end-of-term tests.
