Every Apple product announcement gets attention, but the recent unveiling of iBooks textbooks and the iBooks Author app was of particular interest to educators. While Apple may be disrupting the business model of textbook publishing, its new products don't appear to be disrupting the instructional model of education.

Sometimes referred to as a consumable or cost recovery model, it uses the same approach instititions already use when adopting a new textbook or other instructional material by enabling recovery of the license costs directly from students through course fees or from their purchase of the license at the college bookstore.
