PLATO® Consumer Mathematics helps students develop their math skills, as well as 21st Century skills in Financial Literacy. The curriculum is based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) learning standards. Students, experiencing work life and personal finance for the first time, learn how basic mathematics concepts can be applied to solve concrete, real-life problems. Learning objectives include calculating sales taxes and discounts, interpreting a paycheck, completing an income tax return, regulating income and expenditures with a budget, and planning an investment strategy. Students also learn about loan interest and credit, and factors to consider in making an informed purchase, as well as how economics affect society at both a personal and global level.
